FOSSIL II
Oil on board | 22×27cm | 2024
Original oil painting by Santi Pina
Fossil II continues the exploration begun in Fossil I, but with a stark shift in tone. At its center lies a yellow butterfly, mirroring its counterpart, yet here, the body is broken. The wooden panel on which the painting is made is physically cracked, splitting the torso of the insect in two. The fracture is not hidden; it is the heart of the work.
This rupture transforms the image from preservation to elegy. The butterfly, once a symbol of fragile beauty, becomes a site of tension, between life and loss, between image and object. The crack is both literal and metaphorical: it speaks of time, of damage, of something that could not stay whole.
The deep black background offers no solace, only contrast. In this void, the broken butterfly is both sacred and unsettling, an artifact of tenderness and destruction.
Fossil II is the second and final piece in the Fossil diptych, together, the two works map a silent progression from stillness to fracture, from trace to trauma.
