Oil on board | 115×135cm | 2025

Original oil painting by Santi Pina

Love is a contemporary homage to Velázquez’s Christ Crucified, reimagined through absence, fracture, and restraint. The figure is positioned as in the original: frontal, vertical, solemn, but the similarities begin to dissolve. The background is pure black, consuming the space around the body. The skin is pale, desaturated, almost spectral, and the composition is cropped: no feet, no hands, only the torso and lower limbs, cut just below the knees.

Most striking is the face: erased, broken, unreadable. Where the viewer might expect expression, there is rupture. The erasure denies identification or narrative, transforming Christ from a religious icon into a universal symbol of exposed humanity. This is not a figure of worship, it is a figure of love as vulnerability, as silence, as undoing.

The painting does not dramatize pain, it holds it. It asks what remains when identity is stripped, gesture is removed, and all that’s left is a body; not as sacrifice, but as presence.
