SAMSON
Oil on canvas | 153×160cm | 2024
Original oil painting by Santi Pina
Samson is a contemporary reinterpretation of Solomon J. Solomon’s iconic painting of the biblical strongman. Stripped of its theatrical color and narrative grandeur, this version isolates Samson in a void of black, his skin rendered in desaturated tones, pale, cold, almost lifeless. The composition is tightly cropped, focusing solely on his body in the grip of violence and resistance.
But what dominates is not brute force, it is dissolution. Samson’s face, once central in classical depictions, is here vanishing into darkness, as if his identity cannot survive the struggle. The painting captures a moment of desperate physical tension, but robs it of triumph. There are no Delilahs, no Philistines, no dramatic setting. Just one man, caught in the mechanics of rage and ruin.
The black background turns the scene inward, a fight that feels more existential than mythological. Samson becomes not a hero, but a metaphor for the cost of power, and the inevitable fading of even the strongest.
