Tear is an intimate close-up of a human face, not in full, but in suggestion. The viewer sees a cheek, the soft curve of a nose, the edge of a mouth. A single painted tear glides down the skin, delicate and deliberate. But beyond the image, the physical surface of the painting (a wooden panel) is cracked, ruptured, visibly broken.
